Projects

Our projects are linked to goals detailed in At A Crossroads, the community plan for the area. We identify work which can be taken forward by our task groups and partners and work with other agencies, funders and volunteers to realise projects.

We do this in two ways. Projects may be proposed by members of Shepton 21 volunteers who represent local interest-groups, or may be generated by another agency with whom we then work or are consulted. We work closely with Mendip District Council on many projects.

New Community Centre

We’re working with other agencies to develop a brand new community centre for Shepton Mallet (CATEC), housing advice and training services as well as business support, a community café, a children’s centre and facilities for older people and youth services.

The initiative also incorporates new facilities for the Town Council.
Historic Plaques

Shepton Mallet’s town centre houses many buildings of historical interest. We’re working to create historic plaques detailing the background to some of the points of interest in the High Street.
Milestone Restoration

Historic milestone markers were placed along major routes by the turnpike trusts in the 18th and 19th centuries and many still exist today, although sadly neglected. Working with the Milestone Society, a group of volunteers will be restoring the markers.

Digital Arts Festival

The arts have an important role to play in community regeneration and this view is shared by bodies such as the Arts Council and Somerset Arts. Following a proposal by local enthusiasts, we’ve funded a feasibility study looking into a Digital Arts Festival for Shepton Mallet.
E S Railway Extension

With Mendip Strategic Partnership, we’ve funded a study looking into the creation of an extension to East Somerset Railway. The project would benefit local communications links and attract visitors to the town centre.
Multi-User Paths

We’re keen to improve the network of local multi-user paths extended both within and around Shepton Mallet. Sustrans, Croscombe Parish Council, local groups L.E.G.S and the Cross Trails Trust and Shepton 21 are being consulted by Mendip District Council who aim to develop the network in sections.

Town Centre Signage

We are  working with Mendip District Council to co-ordinate  and improve signage in and around the town centre.

Town Centre Events

We’d like to see more special events in the town centre. We are currently working with the Chamber of Commerce and others to make this possible and are planning a local food and craft market  for the Spring.
