More Money for Town Centre Improvements
(05/02/2008 09.11am)

Have you noticed the building and restoration work taking place in Shepton’s town centre? It’s part of the Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS). A successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund means that the work will now continue for another three years.

The HERS scheme led to some £1,000,000 of investment and extended funding of over £200,000 from Mendip District Council, Shepton Mallet Town Council and Somerset County Council will see the initiative continued until next March. Mendip DC’s success in passing a first stage bidding process to the Heritage Lottery Fund will result in a further £250,000 investment in the town. At A Crossroads, the community plan for Shepton Mallet and its hinterland was submitted as part of the bid. Consultants are currently working with Mendip District Council to develop the plan.

Further investment from MDC, SMTC, English Heritage and the Wolfson and Garfield Weston Foundations has facilitated a major restoration scheme for Shepton’s Market Cross. The project will begin early next year. The Market Cross Charity has transferred its remaining funds to SMTC.
